LOVE LETTERS 1-9

LOVE LETTER 1-9

  • The Love Letters series addresses the emotional distance that exists in human interactions, particularly when confronted with the unfamiliar, the "Other." By using Braille as a tool for encoding messages, Howalt explores the tension between visibility and concealment, presenting works that seem both visible and withheld. The subtlety of Braille, a language often inaccessible to the general viewer, reflects the emotional complexity of estrangement—where meaning is present, but not always immediately understood. These letters are not merely about love; they are about the withholding, the unspoken, and the estranged feelings that often arise in moments of encounter with what we do not understand. The series asks viewers to look inward and connect to these feelings of difference and alienation within themselves, offering an invitation to confront the spaces where we are not fully seen.

  • Each piece in the Love Letters 1-9 series is hand-created using ink on A4-sized graph paper, meticulously crafted to emphasize both structure and spontaneity. The paper's grid serves as a foundation for the intricate layering of ink and Braille, where the precision of the graph contrasts with the organic fluidity of the lines and markings. Braille, used here as an expressive language of touch, adds an additional layer of meaning and texture, offering a tactile experience that invites the viewer to "read" not just with their eyes but with their senses. This combination of materials—ink, graph paper, and Braille—creates a visual and sensory dialogue about communication, emotional distance, and the unsaid. The use of A4-sized paper ensures a personal, intimate scale, encouraging close inspection and engagement with the work’s lletter based meanings.
